WORSHIPING
IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH
John 4:24
"God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth."

The question often comes to mind, can we be pleasing to God and yet worship in a manner that is different than He has commanded?

I have searched the Bible through, and I know of no place where God was ever pleased with a person when the person willfully or negligently worshiped in a different manner than that which was instructed to us by God.

The question before us in this case is,

"Can a person do SOMETHING DIFFERENT (that which God has not commanded) such as substituting
either being sprinkled with water or having water poured  on him instead of being immersed in water), IF,"

"this same person is doing it for the RIGHT REASON OR PURPOSE with an attitude of sincerity and still
        be PLEASING TO GOD?"

The following are two examples given in the Bible where we can see what God thinks.

THOSE WHO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT
OTHER THAN WHAT GOD HAS COMMANDED FOR THE RIGHT PURPOSE

UZZAH

2 Sam 6:6-7 - But when they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah reached out toward the ark of God
and took hold of it, for the oxen nearly upset it.  And the anger of the LORD burned against Uzzah, and God
struck him down there for his irreverence; and he died there by the ark of God.

Num. 4:15 - "And when Aaron and his sons have finished covering the holy objects and all the furnishings
of the sanctuary, when the camp is to set out, after that the sons of Kohath shall come to carry them, SO
THAT THEY MAY NOT TOUCH THE HOLY OBJECTS AND DIE
.  These are the things in the tent of
meeting which the sons of Kohath are to carry.

Uzzah is an illustration from the Bible of someone doing the wrong thing (that which God has not commanded, for the right reason.  Back in Numbers 4:15, God had said that anyone who touched the Ark of the Covenant would die.

As we can see in the above illustration, Uzzah didn't want to see the Ark of the Covenant hurt or damaged (Right Purpose), but he touched it (Wrong Thing).  Was God pleased with Uzzah's action of touching the Ark.  No!  God struck him dead for his irreverence.  Being sincere was not enough.

THOSE WHO PROPHESIED
IN THE NAME OF LORD

Matt 7:21-23 - "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven; but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven.

"Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?'

"And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.'
Here we have a situation where many prophesied (another word for preaching) in the Lord's name, cast out demons and did many miracles.

Evidently, they are before the Judgment Seat of God and He has just told them that their names are not written in the Lamb's Book of Life.  This startling announcement causes them to plea with God and tell Him what they did while here on earth in the name of Christ!

They were certainly sincere and it seems, worked very hard for the Lord while here on the earth!  But why was the Lord not pleased with them?  Well, because they did not do His Father's will.  They did not do the right thing for the right purpose.  They did the wrong thing (that thing which God has not commanded) for the right purpose.

They were worshiping in spirit, sure enough, but they were not worshiping in truth.    This brings us to the conclusion.

CONCLUSION

The conclusion as one reads these two stories is that God is never pleased with our worship if we do the wrong thing (that which God has not commanded) even if it is for the right purpose from the sincerity of our heart.

Therefore, how can we be sure in our hearts that God would be pleased if we substituted sprinkling and pouring for immersion, when we know that in the Bible, God commanded immersion and we can see by examples that people were baptized by immersion?

Do we want to take that kind of chance with our eternal destiny?

HOW SPRINKLING BEGAN
  1. How Sprinkling began - Edinburgh Encyclopedia, Article entitled "Baptism" It said and I quote:
  2. "The first law for sprinkling was obtained in the following manner:  Pope Stephen 2nd, being driven from Rome by Adolphus, King of the Lombards, in 753, fled to Pepin, who a short time before had usurped the crown of France.
  3. While he remained there the Monks of Cressy, in Britany, consulted him as to whether in case of necessity baptism poured on the head of an infant would be lawful.  Stephen replied that it would, yet pouring an sprinkling were not allowed except in cases of necessity.
  4. It was not until the year 1311 that the legislature, in a council held at Ravenna, declared immersion or sprinkling to be indifferent.  From Scotland it made its way into England in the reign of Elizabeth, but it was not authorized in the established Church".
  5. Then from the Edinburgh Encyclopedia, Vol. 3, page 236 it says:  "This permission was granted by the Pope of Rome, and not by Jesus.  The Episcopalian Church, an offshoot of form Romanism, began in 1534.  The Presbyterian, an offshoot from episcopacy, began in 1541, and the Congregational Church soon after.
  6. It is a well-established historic fact, yet a fact kept from the people generally, that for about 100 years, and until the Westminster assembly in 1643, these Churches practiced immersion.  This Assembly, meeting July 1, 1643, discussed this question:  'Shall we continue the practice of immersion, or shall we adopt sprinkling instead?'  Many of the ... Bishops insisted that 'the devil of immersion ought be legislated out of the realm, it is so troublesome'.  At the vote, 24 voted to continue the ancient and Apostolic practice, and 24 voted in favor of sprinkling as being more convenient.  Dr. Lightfoot, the chairman, cast the deciding vote, which was against the ancient practice."

DENOMINATIONAL SCHOLARS
SAY ABOUT BAPTISM
  1. Dr., Wall, Episcopalian said, "Pouring was the substitute for baptism which Calvin first adapted, and his sprinkling was only the substitute of a substitute, and was the most scandalous thing ever adopted for baptism."
  2. Chas. Anthon, LL. D., another Episcopalian, and a Professor of Latin and Creek in Columbia College, New York; said, "The primary meaning of baptism is to dip or immerse. The secondary meaning, if it has any, refers to the same leading idea.  Sprinkling is entirely out of the question."
  3. Martin Luther, founder of the Lutheran church, said, "On this account I could wish that such as are baptized should be completely  immersed into water according to the meaning of the word and the signification of the ordinance...as also without doubt, it was instituted by Christ."
  4. Dr. A. Diomedes Kryiasko, Greek Catholic Church, of the University of Athens, Greece, said: "The verb baptidzo in the Greek language, never has the meaning of to pour or to sprinkle, but is invariably that of dip. In the Greek Church, both in earliest times and in our days, to baptize has meant to dip."
  5. John Wesley, co-founder of the Methodist Church, in his "Notes on the New Testament" on Romans 6:4, said, We are buried with Him--alluding to the ancient manner of baptizing by immersion."
  6. J. T. Christian, a Presbyterian, in his book "Immersion", chapter 27 says:  "I have at hand a fresh and new statement of the case. The Southern Presbyterians of the United States have founded three Churches in Greece, and all three of them practice immersion. Dr. W. D. Powell, of Mexico, recently wrote from Athens, Greece as follows: "I found that all Churches in Greece, the Presbyterians included, are compelled to immerse the candidates for baptism; for, as one of the Professors remarked, the commonest day laborer understands nothing else for baptism but immersion'.
  7. The University of Athens has 9,000 students, of whom 1,200 are preparing to be doctors and lawyers.  I visited the University and asked the Professors what Baptidzo meant, He said: 'It has but one meaning--to immerse. Why do you ask?'"
  8. Calvin, Presbyterians said, "The very word baptize signifies to immerse and it is certain that immersion was the practice of the primitive church."

THE THREE WAYS
OF LEARNING
  1. No matter what it might be, whether it be learning about a job or learning about Christ, there are only three ways to learn something.
THE THREE WAYS

First, we learn by Command
Second, we learn by Example
  • Third, we learn by Inference
  • We will look at these three ways by listing each of the three ways in order with the supporting scriptures from the Bible.

    LEARNING BY COMMAND

    EXAMPLE 1

Matt 28:19 - "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, BAPTIZING (BAPTIZO) them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,
    1. Jesus commands us, who teach others, to do three things: First, make disciples (a learner) and second, baptizing them.  So we have the command to baptize anyone that we make a disciple.  If the word "baptize" means immersion, then we have the command by Christ, Himself, to immerse people.

    EXAMPLE 2
    1. Acts 10:48 - And he ORDERED them to be BAPTIZED (BAPTIZO) in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay on for a few days.
    2. Here, the Apostle Peter makes the command for them to be baptized.  Again if baptism means immersion, then Peter is commanding them to be immersed.

    LEARNING BY EXAMPLE

    EXAMPLE 1
    1. Mark 7:4 - now when they come from the market place, they do not eat unless they cleanse themselves; and there are many other things which they have received in order to observe, such as the WASHING (BAPTIZO) of cups and pitchers and copper pots.)
When they "WASHED" dishes in the Old Testament period of time, they used basins filled with water.  So the above scripture infers the idea of immersion.

    EXAMPLE 2
    1. Luke 11:38 - And when the Pharisee saw it, he was surprised that He had not first ceremonially WASHED (BAPTIZO) before the meal.
When the people of the time of Christ "WASHED" they used basins filled with water.  They immersed their hands into the water in order to "WASH" them.  This therefore infers that baptism is by immersion.

    EXAMPLE 3
    1. Matt 3:6 - and they were being BAPTIZED (BAPTIZO) by him IN (EV) the Jordan River, as they confessed their sins.
    2. John 1:31 - "And I did not recognize Him, but in order that He might be manifested to Israel, I came BAPTIZING (BAPTIZO) IN (EV) water."
    3. John 1:33 - "And I did not recognize Him, but He who sent me to BAPTIZE (BAPTIZO) IN (EV) water said to me, `He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, this is the one who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.'
Notice in the above scriptures the word "IN" is translated from the Greek word (EV) which is equivalent to our word "IN".  It only means one thing in the Greek and that is "IN" something (not with something).
    EXAMPLE 4
    1. Rom 6:4-5 - Therefore we have been BURIED with Him through BAPTISM (BAPTISMA) into death, in order that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.  For IF we have become united with Him in the LIKENESS OF HIS DEATH, certainly we shall be also in the LIKENESS OF HIS RESURRECTION.
    2. Col 2:12 - having been BURIED with Him in BAPTISM (BAPTISMA), in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.
First, notice that baptism is called a "BURIAL" here in these two scriptures.  The question is, how do you bury a person?  Do you sprinkle a little dirt on him?  Of course not.  Do you pour a little dirt on him?  No.  Do you cover him with dirt?  Yes.  Again, here baptism is called a burial which is a fitting parallel.

Second, notice in Romans 6: 4 that because of the word
"IF" our resurrection CONDITIONAL upon being "UNITED IN THE LIKENESS" of Christ's death.  Christ was put inside a tomb and a large rock sealed the entrance.  When we are immersed in water, we are buried just as Christ was buried when he was put in the tomb.

    EXAMPLE 5
    1. Heb 10:22 - let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts SPRINKLED (RHANTISMOS) {clean} from an evil conscience and our bodies WASHED (LOUO) in pure water.
3068  louo (loo'-o); a primary verb; TO BATHE THE WHOLE PERSON; whereas 3538 means to wet a part only, and 4150 to wash, cleanse garments exclusively: KJV-- wash.

    LEARNING BY INFERENCE

    EXAMPLE 1
    1. John 3:23 - And John also was BAPTIZING (BAPTIZO) in Aenon near Salim, because there was MUCH water there; and they were coming and were being BAPTIZED (BAPTIZO).
Think about this.  Why would it matter or not if there was "MUCH" water there or not?  Certainly neither sprinkling or pouring require much water.  Only immersion requires "MUCH" water.  Again, this scripture infers that baptism is by immersion.
     EXAMPLE 2
    1. Acts 8:36-39 - And as they went along the road they came to some water; and the eunuch said, "Look! Water! What prevents me from being BAPTIZED (BAPTIZO)?"  And Philip said, "If you believe with all your heart, you may." And he answered and said, "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God."  And he ordered the chariot to stop; and they both went down INTO the water, Philip as well as the eunuch; and he BAPTIZED (BAPTIZO) him.  And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away; and the eunuch saw him no more, but went on his way rejoicing.
Note: Here, both Philip and the eunuch were wearing robes, the typical clothing for those times.  They saw some water.  We don't know whether it was a pool of water, a lake or a river.  But in any case, they walked down "INTO" the water.  Why, if baptism could be done by sprinkling water on someone or pouring water on someone, would they walk down into the water.  All sprinkling or pouring water on someone would require would be to go to the edge of the river and reach down ones hand or cup and bring out some water and then to proceed to sprinkling it on or pour it on him?  It only makes sense when immersion is required.

    THE TWO COMPELLING FORCES

There are two compelling forces that determine every decision we make.  One is Love and the other is Fear.

  • Fear compels us to do something or not to do something, because there is someone around watching.  Many times people obey the speed limit out of fear for they believe that a policeman is watching.
  • Love compels us, also.  It is different than fear, in that we are willing to do what is right even when no one we watching.  In reference to our heavenly Father and our Lord Jesus Christ, we desire to do whatever we are asked to do, because of the great love which was shown towards us.  Notice the following scriptures.
  • John 3:16 - "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.

I Jn 5:3 - For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome.
If God so loved us so much, how can we love Him any the less and not do what He has asked us to do?
IF "IMMERSION" IS TRULY THE ONLY WAY

If "immersion" is the only way, then what does the Bible say about those who preach and teach that a person can substitute either sprinkling or pouring in place of immersion.

    Galatians 1:6-10
    1. 6        I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel;
    2. 7        which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you, and want to distort the gospel of Christ.
    3. 8        But even though we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to that which we have preached to you, let him be accursed.
    4. 9        As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to that which you received, let him be accursed.
    5. 10        For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a bond-servant of Christ.
    Philippians 3:17-18
    1. 17        Brethren, join in following my example, and observe those who walk according to the pattern you have in us.
    2. 18        For many walk, of whom I often told you, and now tell you even weeping, that they are enemies of the cross of Christ,
    Revelation 22:18-19
    1. 18        I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God shall add to him the plagues which are written in this book;
    2. 19        and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book.

It is with all our heart and all our love that we would like to give to you an opportunity to serve the Lord like you desire to in your life.

From the sincerity of our heart, we would like to invite you to become a Christian and be a part of the spiritual family of Christ and be a part of the congregation that we attend.  It is full of loving people just like yourselves.  All of them have found out the same things that you have just found out and, like you, were very thankful for finding out in time.

God bless you as you as you prepare yourself for eternity in heaven with Christ our Lord.

    WHAT WILL
    YOU
    DO?
